Frequently asked questions
How do I convert hourly to annual salary?
Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then multiply by 52 weeks. For example, $25/hour × 40 hours × 52 weeks = $52,000 annual salary.
How do I convert annual salary to hourly?
Divide your annual salary by the number of work hours per year. For 40 hours/week: divide by 2,080 (40 × 52). For example, $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25/hour.
What is bi-weekly vs semi-monthly pay?
Bi-weekly means every two weeks (26 paychecks/year). Semi-monthly means twice per month (24 paychecks/year). Bi-weekly paychecks are slightly smaller but you get 2 extra per year.
How do I compare job offers with different pay periods?
Convert all offers to the same period (usually annual) for accurate comparison. Don't forget to factor in benefits, bonuses, and other compensation that may differ between offers.
How many work hours are in a year?
Standard calculations use 2,080 hours per year (40 hours/week × 52 weeks). However, actual work hours vary: accounting for 2 weeks vacation = 2,000 hours, 10 holidays + 2 weeks vacation = 1,960 hours. Adjust the calculator's hours per week based on your actual work schedule and time off.
What is the difference between gross and net salary?
Gross salary is your total earnings before deductions. Net salary (take-home pay) is what remains after taxes, Social Security, Medicare, health insurance, retirement contributions, and other deductions. Net is typically 70-80% of gross, depending on tax bracket, state taxes, and benefit elections.
How do I calculate freelance hourly rate from desired salary?
Freelancers need higher hourly rates to cover: self-employment taxes (15.3%), health insurance, retirement savings, unbillable time, equipment, and lack of paid time off. A common formula: desired salary ÷ 1,000 = hourly rate. For example, $80,000 salary ≈ $80/hour freelance rate. Adjust based on your billable hours percentage.
Should I consider overtime when converting salary?
Non-exempt employees earn overtime (1.5× regular rate) for hours over 40/week. If you regularly work overtime, calculate your effective annual income differently. Salaried exempt employees don't earn overtime. When converting, specify 40 hours/week for standard calculation, or actual average weekly hours for total expected income.
How do part-time salaries compare to full-time?
Part-time hourly rates are often similar to full-time rates in the same role, but annual earnings are proportionally lower. However, part-time positions typically offer fewer benefits. Enter your actual hours per week in the calculator (e.g., 20 for half-time) to see accurate annual figures.
What about bonuses, commissions, and other variable pay?
This calculator shows base salary conversions only. For total compensation, add: annual bonus (often 5-20% of base), commission (variable), stock options/RSUs (vested value), 401k match (typically 3-6% of salary), health insurance value ($500-$1,500/month), and other benefits. Total compensation can be 20-40% higher than base salary.
